Etymology

Cognate to Amakusa (Kumamoto) and Kagoshima たみな tamina "pond snail"; Tokunoshima たみな tamina, たんみゃ tanmya and たんにゃ tannya "snail"; Nakijin たんなー tannaa "pond snail"; and Okinawan たーんな taanna "pond snail; mud snail". Ultimately a compound of 【田】 ta "rice field" and みな【蜷】 mina "snail".

Notes

Used especially in central and southern Tokunoshima. In the North, the form たんみゃ tanmya is most common, though form たみな tamina also occurs in some northern areas.
