Etymology

Cognate to Amakusa (Kumamoto) and Kagoshima たみな tamina "pond snail"; Tokunoshima たみな tamina, たんみゃ tanmya and たんにゃ tannya "snail"; Nakijin たんなー tannaa "pond snail"; and Okinawan たーんな taanna "pond snail; mud snail". Ultimately a compound of 【田】 ta "rice field" and みな【蜷】 mina "snail".

Notes

Used especially in Northern Tokunoshima. The form たみな tamina also occurs in the North, but it's comparably rare. In central and southern Tokunoshima, the form たんにゃ tannya is most common.
