Cognate to Fukui, Hyogo, Ayabe (Kyoto), Sanuki (Kagawa), Amakusa (Kumamoto) and Miyako しらめ shirame; Kagoshima したみ shitami, しため shitame and したん shitan; Kikai しらみ shirami; Okinawan しらん shiran and しらみ shirami; Yonaguni つぁん tsan [t͡saŋ]; and standard Japanese しらみ【虱・蝨】 shirami "louse, lice". Ultimately from しら【白】 shira- "white" and むし【虫】 mushi "bug; insect; critter".
