びんだれー

bindaree

Pronunciation: [bin̩daɾeː]

Definition

Noun

  1. Washbasin

Etymology

Cognate to Kagoshima びんだれ bindare and びんだい bindai; Okinoerabu びんだれー bindaree; Okinawan びんだれー bindaree, みんだれー mindaree, びんられー binraree, みんられー minraree, びんだーれ bindaare and びんだーれー bindaaree "washbasin". Also cognate with the now-obsolete Japanese term びんだらい【鬢盥】 bindarai "a small bowl containing water used when tying one's hair". Ultimately from びん【鬢】 bin "hair on the temples" (also meaning "face, head, cheeks" throughout Kyushu) and the rendaku form of たらい【盥】 tarai "washbasin, tub", itself from てあらい【手洗い】 tearai "hand washing; washroom".
