Etymology
Cognate with Okinawan あんだちゅー andachuu and あんだちゃー andachaa "lizard". Possibly also related to Okinawan あたくー atakuu and あたかー atakaa "Okinawa tree lizard".

- Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1811), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Lizard, U'ndlecha".
- 沖縄語典 Okinawa goten (Okinawan language dictionary) (1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records "「あんだちや」 蜥蜴（トカゲ）".

The green grass lizard is found only in the northern and central parts of the Ryukyu islands.
