Etymology

Cognate with Okinawan あんだちゅー andachuu and あんだちゃー andachaa "lizard". Possibly also related to Okinawan あたくー atakuu and あたかー atakaa "Okinawa tree lizard".

Historical attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1811), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Lizard, U'ndlecha".
  • 沖縄語典 Okinawa goten (Okinawan language dictionary) (1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records "「あんだちや」  蜥蜴(トカゲ)".

Notes

The green grass lizard is found only in the northern and central parts of the Ryukyu islands.
