Of Sinitic origin. Likely from either 【大令】 "great magistrate, county magistrate" (cf. Mandarin dà lìng; and Sino-Japanese たいれい tairei) or 【大人】 "adult" or "person of high rank" (cf. Mandarin dàrén; Cantonese daai6 jan4; Hokkien tāi-lîn), also historically used as a form of address to one's parents or elders.
