According to the Ryukyuan Language database entry, this word goes back to 【大令】 (literally "great magistrate/commandant" or "father magistrate/commandant"), which would be read as *ta(i)rei in modern Japanese, *tōa lēng in Hokkien Min Nan, as *dà(i) lìng in Mandarin, and as *daai6 lim1 in Cantonese.

Notes

Historically used by noble families, especially in Shuri.
