Etymology
From たん tan (possibly a compound of た【大】 ta "father; elder" and a reduced genitive particle ん -n); and めー【前】 mee, a suffix of respect. Borrowed into Yaeyama (Hatoma) as たんめー tanmee "grandfather; old man". Compare たーりー taarii "father".

Historically used by noble families, especially in Shuri.
