Attested under the spelling seéba (síba) "lips" in the 1818 Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo island in the Japan Sea, by Herbert John Clifford. Cognate to Kagoshima and Miyazaki すば suba "lips"; Kumamoto つば tsuba "lips"; Oita つば tsuba "lips"; Sesoko しばー shibaa "lips"; Okinawan しば shiba "tongue; lips"; Yonaguni んば nba "lips"; and standard Japanese つば【唾】 tsuba "saliva" or つば【鍔】 tsuba "guard; brim; flange".
