Cognate with Kagoshima にがごい nigagoi and ごい goi; Kumamoto and Miyazaki にがごり nigagori; Tokunoshima いぎゃうい igya'ui; Kunigami (Benoki) and Okinawan ごーやー gooyaa; Yonaguni ぐや guya; and standard Japanese にがうり【苦瓜】 nigauri "bitter melon".
