えいかざい【襟飾い】

eikazai

Definition

Noun

  1. Necktie; tie; cravat; neckscarf; scarf.
  2. Jewelry worn around the neck. A necklace.

Etymology

Cognate to standard Japanese えりかざり【襟飾り】 erikazari (ibid.). Ultimately from えり【襟・衿】 eri "collar (of a shirt or coat)" and かざり【飾り】 kazari "decoration, ornamentation". Historically used to refer to the various types of cloth pieces or jewelry used around the neck or collar of clothing (such as a dress shirt or coat), especially of Western clothing. Compare うでかざり【腕飾り】 udekazari "bracelet".

Historical attestations:

  • An English-Japanese Dictionary of the Spoken Language (1876), by Ernest Mason Satow and Masakata Ishibashi, records "†Necktie, n., eri-kazari" with a note indicating "word not fully naturalized", suggesting a neologism at the time.
  • English-Japanese Conversations for Those who Learn the English Language (1886), by K. Ooi, provides three examples: "Show me a pearl-necklace... Shinju no yeri kazari wo omise nasai", "A fur collar... Ke no yerikazari", "A necklace... Yerikazari".
  • A Japanese-English and English-Japanese Dictionary (1887), by James Curtis Hepburn, records "Erikazari, n. A necktie".
  • 新譯和英辭典 (1909), by Jukichi Inouye, records "Erikazari (襟飾), n. A necktie; a cravat; a scarf (neck)".
  • 鹿児島語と普通語 訂補6版 (1915) records "「えい、かざい」「えり、かざり」「襟飾」".
