Etymology

Attested under the spelling koonda "calf of the leg" in the 1818 Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo island in the Japan Sea, by Herbert John Clifford. Derived from vowel raising, syllable reduction, and fortition of the Old Japanese word こむら【腓】 komura or こぶら kobura, meaning "calf of the leg".
