Cognate to standard Japanese びんた binta "a slap in the face"; Nagasaki びんたん bintan "cheek"; Kagoshima びんた binta "head"; and Okinawan びんた binta "sideburns; upper cheeks". Ultimately derived from びん【鬢】 bin "sideburns; hair on the temples", itself of Chinese origin (cf. Mandarin bìn; Cantonese ban3; and Korean 빈 bin). Compounded with the term た【手】 ta "hand".
