- A traditional Japanese three-stringed musical instrument that is played with a plectrum. Shamisen.
Etymology
The instrument was introduced to Japan from China by way of the Ryukyu Islands some time during the 16th century. The name itself is cognate to Japanese しゃみせん【三味線】 shamisen and its variant さみせん samisen; Kagoshima さんせん sansen; Okinawan さんしん【三線】 sanshin; and Chinese 【三弦】 sānxián.
