Etymology

Cognate with Okinawan まーさん maasan; Yaeyama まーさん maasan; Kagoshima んまか nmaka or うんまか unmaka; and standard Japanese うまい umai "delicious".

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo Island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Good (for eating). Mása" and "Good for nothing. Máconárang".
