よそち【四十・40】

yosochi

Pronunciation: [josot͡ɕi]

Definition

Noun

  1. (Archaism) Forty

Etymology

Attested in the 1711 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu Okinawan dictionary (p. 13), under the spelling ヨソチ yosochi. Cognate to the historically attested Japanese forms よそ・よそじ【四十・卌・四〇・肆十】 yoso and yosoji "forty".

Notes

The expected modern Okinawan reflex would be ゆすち *yusuchi. The Sinitic terms よんじゅう yonjuu and しじゅう shijuu have, however, replaced it in the common language.
