かわひらこ

kawahirako

Definition

Noun

  1. (Archaism) Butterfly; butterflies

Etymology

The variant かわびらこ kawabirako was historically attested in Tochigi and Shizuoka. The term likely derives from from かわ【川・河】 kawa "river", ひら【平】 hira "flat" (also: ひらひら hirahira "flutter"), and the diminutive suffix 【子】 -ko. Similar constructions are attested elsewhere in Japan: for example, てびらこ tebirako and てんびらっこ tenbirakko "butterfly" are used in Iwate.

Notes

This term has largely fallen out of use, but may still be encountered in literary works.
