はーべーるー

haabeeruu

Pronunciation: [haːbeːɾuː]

Definition

Noun

  1. Butterfly; butterflies

Etymology

Attested in the Konkoukenshuu (混効験集, 1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", under the spelling はべる faberu (#2 p. 5). Attested under the spelling habároo (habáru) in the 1818 Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo island in the Japan Sea, by Herbert John Clifford.

Cognate to Yonaguni はびる habiru; Yaeyama ぱぴる papiru, Kohama はぴら hapira, Hatoma ぱびる pabiru, Hateruma ぱぴぅる papïru; Tarama ぱぴる papiru; Miyako ぱびル pabiɿ; Okinawan はべる haberu and はーべーるー haabeeruu; Okinoerabu はびら habira; Amami and Kikai はぶら habura and はびら habira (pos. habïra); and Miyazaki はべる haberu, はべりょー haberyoo. Seemingly derived from two morphemes: ha + hiru/heru/hira.

Related to the archaic Japanese term ひひる hihiru and possibly かわひらこ kawahirako "butterfly". Apparent to the Iwate term てびらこ tebirako "butterfly" (てびらっこ tebirakko, てんびらっこ tenbirakko), the Nakijin term たべーるー tabeeruu (ibid.), and the Japanese onomatopoeia ひらひら hirahira "flutter". Possibly cognate to the Ainu word ヘポラㇷ゚ heporap "butterfly; moth" (variants: ハポラㇷ゚ haporap; ホポラㇷ゚ hoporap; ホプラㇷ゚ hopurap; and エラプラㇷ゚ erapurap).

Notes

Variant: はべる haberu "butterfly".

意味:ちょうちょう【蝶々・蝶蝶】、こちょう【胡蝶】、ちょう【蝶】
