つつ【蝶々・蝶蝶】 : tsutsu | define meaning

Cognate to Tsugaru ちょちょ chocho; Kagoshima ちゅちゅ chuchu, つつ tsutsu and ちょちょ chocho; Miyako ちょーちょー choochoo; and standard Japanese ちょうちょう【蝶々・蝶蝶】 chouchou "butterfly". Ultimately a reduplicated form of ちょう【蝶】 chou "butterfly", historically written as てふ tefu. The latter stems from Chinese 【蝶】 "butterfly" (cf. Mandarin dié; Cantonese dip6; Wu diq; Min Nan tia̍p and ia̍h; Sino-Korean 접 jeop; Sino-Vietnamese điệp).
