でげす : degesu · de gesu | define meaning
degesu · de gesu
Pronunciation: [deɡesu]
Definition
Archaic Copula
- (Archaic) To be; to exist
Etymology
Cognate to the standard Japanese form でございます【で御座います】 de gozaimasu "to be"; as well as the Kyushu variants でがあす de gaasu, でぐゎす de gwasu, でごわす de gowasu, でござす de gozasu "to be". The reduced form でげす degesu (or de gesu) was commonplace among traders and the working class of the former capital of Edo, now modern-day Tokyo. The form is no longer encountered in any dialect, but is still used in some television shows and popular anime series to evoke an old-fashioned feel.
