Etymology

Cognate to standard Japanese しぬ【死ぬ】 shinu "to die". The origin of the initial け ke- likely stems from the nominal form of the Kagoshima verb きゆっ【消ゆっ】 kiyuq ~ kiyu' "to go out", cognate to the standard Japanese verb きえる【消える】 kieru.
