Etymology

Attested as early as in the 1896 沖縄語典 (Okinawan language dictionary), by Masayo Nakamoto, page 15. Derived from あみ【雨】 ami "rain" and the nominal form of the verb ふいん【降いん】 fuin "to rain, to precipate". Cognate to standard Japanese あめふり【雨降り・雨降】 amefuri "rainfall; rainy".
