Cognate with standard Japanese ういきょう【茴香】 uikyou "fennel". Ultimately from Chinese 【茴香】 "fennel" (cf. Mandarin huíxiāng; Cantonese wui4 hoeng1; Eastern Min huòi-hiŏng; Hokkien hôe-hiong, hôe-hioⁿ and hôe-hiuⁿ; Sino-Korean 회향 hoehyang), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *hwoj xjang.
