Cognate with standard Japanese ういきょう【茴香】 uikyou "fennel". Ultimately from Chinese 【茴香】 "fennel" (cf. Mandarin huíxiāng; Cantonese wui4 hoeng1; Eastern Min huòi-hiŏng; Hokkien hôe-hionghôe-hioⁿ and hôe-hiuⁿ; Sino-Korean 회향 hoehyang), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *hwoj xjang.

  • 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu (1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", records "「うへきやう」蘹香 茴香共書".
