Cognate with standard Japanese ぶじ【無事】 buji "safety". Ultimately from Chinese 【無事・无事】 "all right; safe; without incident; nothing further to say" (cf. Mandarin wúshì; Cantonese mou4 si6; Min Dong mò̤-dâi and ù-sê̤ṳ; Sino-Korean 무사 musa; and Sino-Vietnamese vô sự), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *mju dzriH.
