Cognate with Kagoshima あひい ahii and あひ ahi; Kunigami (Oku) あぺるー aperuu and あぺらー aperaa; Okinawan あふぃる afiru, あひる ahiru, あふぃらー afiraa and あひらー ahiraa; and standard Japanese あひる【家鴨・鶩】 ahiru "duck".

  • 混効験集 Konkoukenshuu (1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", records "「あひら」鶩(アヒル)の事。あへら共云。".
  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo island, in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Duck, a tame. A'feeroo".
