Cognate with Saga はなぼうろ hanabouro "round pastry made from wheat flour dough and filled with apricot jam"; and Okinawan はなぼーる hanabooru "baked pastry made from flour and sugar that shaped like a wisteria flower". Ultimately from はな【花】 hana "flower" and ボウロ bouro or ボウル bouru "pastry, cake", itself borrowed from the Portuguese word bolo "pastry, cake".
Historical Ryukyuan attestations
- Narrative of a voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait, to co-operate with the Polar Expeditions (1831), by Frederick William Beechey, records "Among the dishes [...] were different kinds of pastry, one of a circular form, called hannaburee".
