Notes
The term ふーる fuuru traditionally refers to a latrine that was connected to a pig's sty (also called っわーふーる・うゎーふーる【豚ふーる】 qwaafuuru), where the pigs would essentially feed on human waste. The concept of pig sty latrines was imported from China where, today, it remains in use in some rural areas. In Okinawa, the practice was banned following the American takeover at the end of World War II.
