  • Essay in Aid of a Grammmar and Dictionary of the Luchuan Language (1895), by Basil Hall Chamberlain, records "Agai, east. (Jap. agari, rising.)".
  • 沖縄語典 Okinawa goten (Okinawan language dictionary) (1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records "「ひがし、あがり、あかがい」東(ヒガシ、ヒムガシ)、あがりハあかり(明)ニシテ日ハ東ヨリ出ツルヲ似テカク云フヤ" and  "「あがい」上(アガリ)".
