Attested as early as in the 1896 沖縄語典 Okinawagoten "Okinawan language dictionary" (p. 70), by Masayo Nakamoto, under the spelling てィん tin, and with the definitions 空 "sky", 造化天然自然 "the natural universe", and 天 "sky; heaven".
