やーどぅー : yaaduu | define meaning
yaaduu
Pronunciation: [jaːduː]
Definition
Noun
- Gecko; house gecko; tree gecko; ground gecko
Etymology
Cognate with Okinawan (Shuri) やーどぅー yaaduu and Okinawan (Akajima, Shuri) やーるー yaaruu "gecko". Possibly related to standard Japanese やど【宿】 yado "lodging, dwelling"; compare how やもり【守宮・家守】 yamori "gecko" originates from a compound of *ya "house" and *mori "protection, protector".

- 沖縄語典 Okinawa goten (Okinawan language dictionary) (1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records "「やむり、やーどゥ」 家守(ヤモリ)".
Notes
Some of the most common species of gecko around Okinawa Island are the Common Okinawa (or Ryukyu) Ground Gecko (Goniurosaurus kuroiwae kuroiwae), the Mourning Gecko (Lepidodactylus lugubris), and the House Gecko (Hemidactylus frenatus) found throughout the Ryukyu chain, as well as the Ryukyu Tokashiki Gecko (Goniurosaurus kuroiwae orientalis) found primarily in the Kerama Islands.
