Cognate with Tanegashima おおぎ oogi; Amami うぎ ugi; Okinoerabu をぅじ wuji; Yoron ふぎ fugi; Okinawan をぅーじ wuuji; and Miyako ぶーぎ buugi and ぶーず buuzu "sugar cane". Also cognate with the standard Japanese term おぎ【荻】 ogi, which refers to Amur Silvergrass (Miscanthus sacchariflorus), an unrelated grass plant.
