Cognate with standard Japanese かんらん【橄欖】 kanran "Chinese olive". Ultimately from Chinese 【橄欖・橄榄】 "olive" (cf. Mandarin gǎnlǎn; Cantonese gaam3 laam2 and gaam3 laam5; Min Dong gā-lāng and gāng-lāng; Hokkien káⁿ-ná and kaⁿ-ná; Sino-Korean 감람 gamnam), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *kamX lamX.

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Vocabulary of the language spoken at the Great Loo-Choo island in the Japan Sea (1818), by Herbert John Clifford, records "Olives, Kárang".
