Cognate with Okinawan どー doo; Okinawan and Yaeyama (Hatoma) ろー roo "candle"; standard Japanese ろう【蝋・蠟】 rou "wax". Ultimately from Chinese 【蠟・蜡】 "wax, candle" (cf. Mandarin ; Cantonese laap6; Min Dong lăk; Hokkien la̍h and la̍p; Sino-Korean 랍 rap and 납 nap; Sino-Vietnamese rệp, lạp and sáp), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *lap.
