Etymology

Cognate with Tsushima やしを yashiwo; Nagasaki (Uku) and Kagoshima やし yashi /jaH/; Okinawan やーし yaashi; Tarama やしゅ yashu; Yaeyama (Hateruma) やし yashi; and standard Japanese やし【椰子】 yashi "palm tree". Ultimately from Chinese 【椰子】 "coconut" (cf. Mandarin yēzi, yézi; Cantonese je4 zi2; Min Dong ià-cī; Hokkien iâ-chí; Sino-Korean 야자 yaja), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *yae tsiX.
