Cognate with Okinawa (Ikeijima) おーなぎ oonagi; and Okinawan (Shuri) おーなじゃー oonajaa "Ryukyu green snake". Ultimately from あお【青】 ao "blue, green" and うなぎ【鰻】 unagi "eel". Compare Kunigami (Takazato) やまうなぎ【山鰻】 yamaunagi "Ryukyu green snake".

Notes

This snake can be found throughout the Northern Ryukyuan Islands, including the Tokara islands, the Amami islands and the Okinawa islands.
