Etymology

Cognate with Okinawan (Yomitan) はごーはん hagoohan and Okinawan (Shuri) はごーさん hagoosan "dirty". Most likely cognate with standard Japanese はがゆい【歯がゆい・歯痒い】 hagayui "frustrating, irritating, unbearable (to watch)".

Historical Ryukyuan attestations

  • Essay in Aid of a Grammmar and Dictionary of the Luchuan Language (1895), by Basil Hall Chamberlain, records "Hagōsang, filthy".
