Etymology

Derived from the honorific prefix 【御】 gu-, and the noun りー【礼】 rii "gratitude, bow" (cognate to standard Japanese as れい【礼】 rei "gratitude, bow"). Cognate to Kagoshima ごれ【ご礼・御礼】 gore, used as an expression of gratitude.

Compare the standard Japanese honorific form おれい【お礼・御礼】 o-rei "gratitude, bow". Compare also the Okinawan term ぐぶりー【御無礼】 guburii "discourtesy, rudeness" and Japanese cognate ごぶれい【御無礼】 goburei (ibid.).
