ちゅらさん【清らさん・美らさん】

churasan

Pronunciation: [t͡ɕuɾasaŋ̍]

Definition

Sa-Adjective

  1. (Common) Beautiful, lovely, darling, pretty, elegant
  2. (Rare) Clean, pure, chaste

Etymology

Derived from the Old Okinawan form きよら【清ら】 kiyora "beauty" (cf. Omorosōshi, p.59); compare also しより【首里】 shiyori (cf. Omorosōshi, p.370), later しゅり shuri,  しゅい shui, modern すい sui "Shuri (Castle)". Suffixed with the Okinawan adjectival ending さん -san, ultimately derived from the ending さ -sa followed by the existential auxiliary ある aru. Cognate to the Japanese term きよら【清ら】 kiyora, possibly derived from the now-archaic form けうら keura, meaning "beautiful, lovely, clean".

The Kanji spelling 【美らさん】 is borrowed off the Japanese term うつくしい【美しい】 utsukushii "beautiful".
