Cognate to the standard Japanese term たいふう【台風・颱風】 taifuu, meaning "typhoon, tropical cyclone, hurricane". Derived from Chinese 【大風・大风・颱風・台風・台风】 (lit.) "great wind" (cf. Mandarin táifēng or dàfēng "typhoon; windstorm"; Cantonese daai6 fung1 "typhoon"). Of debated or conflated origin, related to the eastern forms: Arabic طوفان ṭūfān, Hindi तूफ़ान tūfān, Persian طوفان tufân "typhoon; whirlwind; violent wind"; Greek τύφειν typhein "smoke".
