Borrowed from standard Japanese しがらみ【柵】 shigarami "weir". Ultimately from the nominal form of the verb しがらむ【柵む】 shigaramu.

Historical attestations

  • 沖縄語典 Okinawa goten (Okinawan language dictionary) (1896), by Masayo Nakamoto, records "「しがらみ」柵(シガラミ)流水ヲ塞グ時材ソ打ツケテ橫ニ竹木ヲ卷キツケタルモノ", loosely translated as "Shigarami. A weir. A structure designed to block the flow of water made of pieces of wood hammered into the ground and pieces of bamboo attached horizontally to them."
