Cognate to Okinawan りん rin and でぃん din; and standard Japanese れん【蓮・藕】 ren (used mainly in compounds) "lotus". Ultimately from Chinese 【蓮・莲】 (cf. Mandarin lián; Cantonese lin4 and len3; Gan lien4; Hokkien liân, nâi, nûi, lân; Sino-Korean 련 ryeon and 연 yeon; Sino-Vietnamese liên), reconstructed for Middle Chinese as *len.
