Etymology

Derived from reduction of the form あの【彼の】 ano "that (over there)". Cognate to Yuwan Amami あん an; Kagoshima あん an; and standard Japanese あの【彼の】 ano "that (over there)". Ultimately formed from the distal deictic root あ【彼】 a-, followed by the genitive particle の【乃・之】 no. Related to the variant かの【彼の】 kano; Yonaguni かぬ kanu.
