Derived from reduction and vowel raising of the form この【此の・斯の】 kono "this". Cognate to Kagoshima こん kon; Okinawan くぬ kunu; and standard Japanese この【此の・斯の】 kono "this". Ultimately formed from the proximal deictic root 【此・斯】 ko-, followed by the genitive particle 【乃・之】 no.
