Etymology
Cognate to Middle Japanese おうこ【朸】 ouko and おうご ougo "carrying pole, pole, stick, cane", also attested as おこ oko around the 17th century. Written in classical Japanese as あふこ afuko and あふご afugo. The kanji 【枴】 was also used around the 17th century to emphasize the meaning "cane".
