えぼし【烏帽子】

eboshi

Definition

Noun

  1. Cockscomb; comb

Etymology

Cognate to Hiroshima and Shimane よぼし yoboshi; and Yamaguchi and Kagoshima えぼし eboshi "cockscomb". Also cognate to standard Japanese えぼし【烏帽子】 eboshi, which refers to a traditional black cap worn by men of certain social status. Ultimately from え【烏】 e "crow, raven" and ぼうし【帽子】 boushi "hat, cap". The semantic shift to "cockscomb" in southern Japan can be attributed to the resemblance of a cock's comb to an eboshi hat.
