Etymology

Cognate with Okinawan (Shuri) さんぴんちゃ sanpin cha; and Yaeyama (Hatoma) さんぴんさー sanpin saa "jasmine tea". Derived from さんぴん sanpin "jasmine", ultimately from the Chinese term 【香片】 "jasmine (tea), scented (tea)" (cf. Mandarin: xiāng piàn; Cantonese: hoeng1 pin3; Hokkien hiong-phìⁿ); and ちゃ【茶】 cha "tea".
