Etymology

Derived from the deictics あま ama "over there" and くま kuma "here". Attested as early as in the Konkoukenshuu (混効験集, 1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", under the spelling あまこま amakoma, and given the Japanese definition あなたこなた anata konata "here and there". Related to the standard Japanese constructions あちこち achikochi, あっちこっち acchi kocchi, and あちらこちら achira kochira; and Kagoshima あっちゃこっちゃ accha koccha "here and there".
