ゆんぬふとぅば【与論言葉】 : yunnu futuba | define meaning
yunnu futuba
Pronunciation: [jun̩nu ɸutuba]
Definition
Noun
- (Local appellation) Yoron language; Yoronjima language; (Historical) Yoron dialect; Yoronjima dialect
Etymology
Ultimately from ゆんぬ yunnu "Yoron" (cognate to the standard Japanese form よろん【与論】 yoron) and ふとぅば futuba "language, way of speaking" (cognate to standard Japanese ことば【言葉】 kotoba "words; way of speaking, dialect, language").
Notes
The island of Yoron, or Yoronjima, is situated in the southern reach of the Amami Islands. The variety spoken on this island has traditionally been classified as either a dialect of Amami or of Kunigami. Nowadays, however, an increasing number of authors consider Yunnu futuba to be its own language within the greater Northern Ryukyuan languages group.
