Etymology

The word ゆんぬ yunnu is cognate to the standard Japanese form よろん【与論】 yoron. ふとぅば futuba is cognate to standard Japanese ことば【言葉】 kotoba "language; dialect; words".

Notes

The island of Yoron, or Yoronjima, is situated in the southern reach of the Amami Islands. Though close to Okinawa, Yunnu futuba is generally regarded as a dialect of the Amami language, and t is sometimes labelled as a separate language by some authors.
