なんくゎん・なんくぁん【南瓜】

nankwan

Pronunciation: [naŋ̍kʷaŋ̍]

Definition

Noun

  1. Any pumpkin or squash of the genus Cucurbita, especially of the species Cucurbita moschata (which includes the Neck Pumpkin and the Butternut Squash, among others).

Etymology

Cognate to standard Japanese なんか【南瓜】 nanka "pumpkin; gourd". Ultimately from Chinese 【南瓜】 "pumpkin; cushaw; winter gourd" (cf. Mandarin nánguā; Cantonese naam4 gwaa1). Literal compound of 【南】 "south; southern" and 【瓜】 "gourd". In Japanese, this Kanji spelling is now used for the Portuguese loans かぼちゃ kabocha and, in Kyushu, ぼうぶら boubura.
