Cognate to Kagoshima こっ koʔ (< kobu) "spider"; Tanegashima こぶ kobu "large spider"; Amami (Setouchi) こぶ kobu; Okinawan くーばー kuuba; Yonaguni くぶ kubu "spider"; and possibly standard Japanese くも【蜘蛛】 kumo "spider". Attested in the Okinawan Konkoukenshuu (混効験集, 1711), "Words of the Royal Palace", under the spelling くぶ kubu (p. 12).
