せからし・せからしっ

sekarashi

Definition

I-Adjective

  1. Annoying; noisy; irritating; unbearable; importunate

Etymology

Cognate with the pan-Kyushu forms せからしい sekarashii and せからしか sekarashika, as well as the Kagoshima variant せからし sekarashi and the Hiroshima and Miyazaki form せわしい sewashii "annoying; noisy; irritating". Also cognate to Kagoshima そがらし sogarashi and そがらしか sogarashika meaning both "overwhelming (amount)" and "annoying; noisy"; and the standard Japanese adjective せわしい【忙しい】 sewashii "busy; hectic". Ultimately from せく【急く】 seku "to be busy", らし rashi "-like; seeming", and the adjectival ending い -i or, in Western Kyushu, か -ka.
